About the project
residency, february – september 2004
A residency in HMP Bullingdon, a Category B/C male prison, working with prisoners on the theme of personal identity and whether this changed through the experience of being in custody. The work was exhibited in the cafe at Modern Art Oxford from July – September 2004 and in the prison visitor centre.
The residency was a collaboration between HMP Bullingdon, Milton Keynes College and Modern Art Oxford. It was funded through the Baring Foundation.
As an outcome of the residency I worked with Alan Powell, an art teacher in the prison, and delivered a two year programme of monthly workshops in the Visits Hall with prisoners’ children. This was funded initially through Modern Art Oxford and latterly by Thames Valley Partnership.
