About the project
inter-generational project and weekly workshop series, 2000 – 2002
‘New leaves’ was a six month inter-generational project I originated. It was funded through Millennium Festival Awards and based at the Ark T Centre in Oxford. Year 11 students from St. Augustine of Canterbury Upper School and residents at Longlands care home chose to participate in the project. Initially, the two groups participated separately in weekly workshops to create work and to discuss their stereotypes about the other group. This work was then shared with the other group. Thereafter, the two groups worked together to produce an exhibition of suspended books which was shown at the Ark T Centre gallery during 2001. I created the text in the books, from memories shared by participants during the sessions.
This project was one of many I worked on whilst I was based at the Ark T Centre. I will always be grateful to James Grote, and to Ark T Centre artists, staff, volunteers and trustees for their encouragement and inspiration.
‘new leaves’ led to a two year weekly workshop series in Longlands care home, which incorporated a project with the Pitt Rivers Museum.
with thanks to Janice Laidlaw who worked alongside me in many of the workshops in Longlands care home
